May Luncheon Notes

The PPA was pleased to host editors from major men's magazines who shared tips on getting national coverage on and off the book pages.

GQ
Mickey Rapkin - Associate Editor
9th Floor - 4 Times Square
NEW YORK, New York 10036
P: 212-286-5512
Email: michael_rapkin@condenast.com

  • Does four excerpts per year, non-fiction only.
  • Question & Answer, first chapters are online.
  • One full page of reviews every month.
  • Pet peeve - self-help, diet (no abs, no ZONE diet).
  • Wants "good books" - show enthusiasm, show that you read it, put a personal note in.
  • Web site serves as a supplement to the magazine and they are now doing more podcasts.
  • Okay with author lunches and will occasionally attend a party, but doesn't want to be a press whore.

ESQUIRE
Tyler Cabot - Assistant Editor/Books Page Editor
21st Floor, 300 West 57th Street
NEW YORK, New York 10019
P: 212-649-4250
F: 212-640-4305
Email: tcabot@hearst.com

  • Sometimes will do author lunches, but prefers to meet publicists so he can build relationships.
  • Will never cover parenting or frat-type books; likes readable, well-written books.
  • Throws out press kits and letters for the most part; occasional personal notes are okay and NO EMAIL BLASTS.
  • He will review books on their merit alone.
  • Web site is no longer based on subscription and they too are doing podcasts.

DETAILS
Allison Mooney - Assistant to the Editor-in-Chief
3rd Floor, 750 Third Avenue
NEW YORK, New York 10017
P: 212-630-3807
F: 212-630-3819
Email: allison_mooney@condenast.com

  • She will consider female authors, no sports, no frat-type books, quirky/subculture is okay.
  • Two features, five short reviews, one art/photogrphy book are the monthly coverage - never cook books.
  • They share online content with GQ.
  • The Setpember issue will have thirteen pages of fall books to be on the lookout for.
  • She will do office visits to pitch the list, lunches are okay as well once relationship has been established.
  • Pet peeve - follow-up call and BS pitches.
  • Web site will be revamped by June/July with more extensive book coverage.

PLAYBOY
Amy Grace - Literary Editor
730 Fifth Avenue
NEW YORK, New York 10019
P: 212-261-5056
F: 212-957-2900
Email: aloyd@playboy.com

  • She talked about the different sections that books are used in, but asks that we send to her to pass around accordingly - sidebars, round-ups, longer reviews are the way she has re-vamped coverage.
  • She can use writers as experts or as authors of articles for magazine.
  • Do not send her sex manuals.
  • She will do the occasional lunch, but office visits to pitch are okay.
  • They will cover humor, politics, sports, adventure, quirky and drinking books.
  • Erotic Eye section - a somewhat regular feature, is where illustrated books get covered - art, photography - anything sensual.
  • She is already working on her September issue.
  • Web site is run through corporate and not by the magazine.
  • They may be starting a book club - but not definite.

MEN's JOURNAL
Seth Fletcher - Assistant Editor
1290 Sixth Avenue
NEW YORK, New York 10104
P: 212-484-1680
F: 212-484-3433
Email: seth.fletcher@mensjournal.com

  • ADVENTURE is the key word here - outdoors, travel.
  • One page of books - three to five a month.
  • Will do round-ups on subjects if a theme is noticed or called to attention.
  • New environmental affairs section will also have book coverage.
  • They do not do excerpts.
  • He never answers his phone and when pitching via email - be honest.
  • Web site is currently bare bones but will be re-vamped.

GENERAL NOTES

  1. Round-ups - Alli doesn't like gift book round-ups, but is doing the September one; Seth and Tyler will do it organically.
  2. It is okay to mention competition when doing pitching.
  3. What makes sthem read? All rely on relationships, suggestions, previews/catalogues and the merits of the authors.
  4. Sports -- Tyler will only cover sports books along the lines of Will Bylthe - well-written.
  5. Details will never cover sports; Seth likes non-traditional sports or a sports book with cultural relevance.
  6. Audio books - mostly, NO, but again, if it was something BIG - they will consider.
  7. Business - Mickey covers if it is narrative in nature - not a "how to" - must be thought provoking.
